Boko Haram: Shekau’s associate found dead –Army
As the battle to root out members of the Boko Haram sect in the North-East continued, the army yesterday confirmed the death of a man it described as a close associate of the terrorists’ leader, Abubakar Shekau.

It said the man died while running errands for the sect’s leadership. The Defence Headquarters, DHQ, did not, however, disclose whether the man was killed in combat or died as a result of other extraneous factors.

Defence spokesman, Brigadier-General Chris Olukolade, said yesterday in a statement that; “A terrorist believed to be a close associate of the insurgents’ leader, Abubakar Shekau, has been found dead as he ran errand for the leadership.”

Olukolade also confirmed the arrest of two Nigeriens who, in the company of the deceased, had made frequent attempts to enter into Niger Republic through the Lake Chad.

“The other two fellow terrorists, one of who is confirmed to be a Nigerien, are now in the custody of the Multinational Joint Task Force.

“The three were in the process of crossing the border to the neighbouring Niger Republic through the Lake Chad,” said the DHQ. According to the statement, the trio have been confirmed to have operated in Baga and participated in perpetrating arson and other atrocities in the town.

“They have been relocating from place to place since they left Baga last month,” the DHQ said, adding that more troops of the riot police had joined the operations even as more towns are being secured in order to rid the nation’s of terrorists.
