Low Carb Dieting

Low carb diets work by forcing the body to switch from using carbohydrate stored within the muscles in the form of a substance called glycogen to fuel the body, to using fat instead - both the fat in your food, and the fat in your body that you want to get rid of (which is why you're on a diet in the first place).

When you are on a low carb diet and your body is in this fat burning state (called benign ketosis), everything you do from normal physical processes to activity, is fueled by fat. Consider that even when sleeping, the body uses 55 calories (on average) of energy per hour. If all of those are coming from fat, then yes, you will lose weight without doing anything much at all, but it will be slow.

If you do an activity where you burn 300 calories an hour, and all of those are coming from fat, then imagine the speed at which you can lose weight then?

For this reason, to really get the most out of your low carb diet, as well as all the other benefits such as improved mood, stronger muscles, better fitness, a healthier heart and so on and so forth, exercise as much as you are able to.

If you are very overweight and very unfit, it can be tempting to put off starting an exercise regime until you've been on the diet for a while and shed the first bit of weight, because exercise will be easier then, but any increase in activity is good, even if it is just walking a little more. On most diets you need to do around 20 minutes of cardio before you get into the "fat burning zone", but on low carb you are in it all the time, so even if you can only manage five minutes of gentle exercise to start with, on a low carb diet that is still five minutes o burning fat you wouldn't otherwise have had. You will lose weight faster, and your fitness will improve over time until you are able to do significantly more.

If you are someone who is put off by formal "workouts", don't think in terms of "exercise" but in terms of general activity. Housework, gardening and decorating all count just as much as going for a walk or a swim. Be conscious of when you are moving about and when you are not, and try and find ways to be moving more of the time - it will really speed up your results.
