People underestimate the value of sleeping enough hours a day in order to maintain a healthy body. Most adults get caught up in their busy lifestyles that sleeping doesn't become a priority anymore. Alongside having to binge in fast food and just eating whatever's available, most people tend to sleep only when they can, that is, when all the work is done and they've got nothing else to do.
That's not supposed to be the case. Adults need around 7-9 hours of sleep a day. Otherwise, not only do they lose a lot of energy during the day which makes them less productive, they also risk gaining excessive weight.
While healthy eating is important to losing weight, sleep is what makes it all happen. The process is called metabolism, where you cells work to make new ones, which result to growth and certain physical changes. Sleep is where you get the most time to metabolize, so you gain or lose the most weight during your sleep.
It doesn't even take any scientific study to show you that the number of people diagnosed with obesity around the world is growing. You can see how more and more people can be seen with so much weight put on them; people think it's a normal occurrence, which is a bad thing.
Excessive weight gain has been attributed to reduced sleeping time. Forty years ago, statistics in the United States showed that the people's regular general sleeping time has gone down by 1.5 to 2 hours. And just in 2002, the decreased rate has doubled, resulting to one third of the adult population sleeping only for no more than six hours.
As mentioned before, this increase is due to the rise of busier lifestyles. But adults and teenagers have their own ways of manifesting this. For adults, the increasing number of night shifting jobs greatly affects their sleeping time, since their bodies are not used to sleeping during the day. Teenagers, on the other hand, are often stressed out and distracted by so many things like the internet, text messaging and television. Some kids don't even sleep anymore because they surf the net all night.
What's keeping you from getting enough sleep? You have to do something about it before you start experiencing the effects. Remember, whether you're an adult or a teenager, you should observe an average of 8-10 hours of sleep per day.
