Lets not forget that we're talking about a multi-billion dollar worldwide industry here...and it has us well and truly hooked!
In reality, our body is really quite good at ridding itself of all the bad stuff we ingest, particularly over the festive season and at holiday time. There is a popular misconception that we can speed up this process by drinking "stylish" bottled water (check out the price of some of that stuff!), or sipping herbal teas till the cows come home!
Sadly, this is pretty much nonsense! In point of fact, studies have shown that many of the detox diets and associated supplements are not really that good for you, nor have they undergone appropriate testing. Alarmingly, chemists are actively looking at the make-up some of these remedies, because of the toxic nature of many of their components!
The facts are, there is no magic wand you can wave, and no wonder diet you can follow that doesn't have some nutritional and/or health risk associated with it. At best, they offer a fairly short-term solution to a long-term problem.
So why do detox diets appear to work at first? Primarily, this is because we initially lose water in large amounts. Glycogen is stored in the body to provide instant energy, when needed...and Glycogen is bound up in water! That's why, as soon as you have a slice of pizza, the weight goes straight back on again!
The average body requires about 2,500 and 2,000 calories per day for males and females, respectively. If you limit the calorie intake to 1,300, or so, the body begins to use up essential nutrients and starts to break down muscle tissue. This is why most learned opinion is that a varied, balanced diet, comprising smaller portions is a far better, and more effective option...albeit slower to produce results.
Most detox diets fail to mention exercise, but this is a proven, vital component to any weight loss program.
